Gary Warner, DVM
Dr. Warner grew up in north Louisiana in a family run cow/calf and stocker operation. His dad moved the family to Ferriday, Louisiana in 1965 where his dad operated an auction barn and continued in the cow/calf business and was also a procurer of replacement cows. Dr. Warner received a BS from the University of Louisiana at Monroe in 1977 and received his DVM degree from the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1980. Immediately after graduation, Dr. Warner entered clinical practice as a mixed animal associate at Elgin Veterinary Hospital. After 2 years of employment, he became a partner and developed a primary interest in large animals and eventually, just beef cattle practice. Today, the practice is largely referral based, focusing primarily on lameness and reproductive problems in both the male and female. Dr. Warner has been actively involved with the Professional Bull Riders as a consultant and practitioner for many years, providing for animal welfare and the well-being of the animals involved in their sport. Other practice interests involve the purebred and show cattle industries and servicing the needs of individual producers. He has been actively involved in the show steer industry in Texas, helping many children with their projects and even raising a few of his own.
Emily Thometz, DVM
Dr. Emily Thometz was born and raised in Minnesota, where she became actively involved with 4-H, FFA, and showing horses. Her love of the West drew her to Colorado State University, where she earned a dual Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science and Agricultural Business in 2012. In the spring of 2011, Dr. Thometz completed a six-month internship in Kentucky at Hagyard Equine Medical Center, where she focused on neonatal intensive care. She moved back to Minnesota to attend the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, earning her DVM in 2016. Dr. Thometz completed an internship at Arizona Equine, where she worked closely with a boarded specialist before moving to Texas in 2017. She has an off-the-track thoroughbred horse, and in her free time, she loves riding, running, and skiing. Her veterinary interests include sports medicine and surgery.
Brian Brandon, DVM
Dr. Brian Brandon came to Elgin Veterinary Hospital after graduating from Louisiana State University in 2000 to pursue an internship. Dr. Brandon was invited to stay on as an associate. Dr. Brandon has enjoyed developing his skills at Elgin Veterinary Hospital and is proficient in all areas of equine medicine. His special interests include colic surgery and lameness diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Brandon has also enjoyed becoming involved in the race horse industry and is highly sought after for the management of the performance equine. Dr. Brandon is an active member in several organizations including; American Association of Equine Practitioners, Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association, Texas Veterinary Medical Association and Texas Equine Medical Association.
Tommy Hays, DVM
Dr. Tommy Hays graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1985. His expertise in orthopedic and soft tissue surgery is an integral part of our surgery services. Dr. Hays’ reputation as a skilled surgeon and keen eye for lameness brings in clientele from many neighboring states. Dr. Hays has been active in many different organizations over the years including; Texas Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association Board of Directors since 2001 and President 2006 to present, Texas Quarter Horse Association Executive Committee 2004 to present and President in 2007, American Quarter Horse Association member/Texas National Board of Directors, Texas Thoroughbred Association member 1987 to present, American Association of Equine Practitioners 1985 to present, founding member Texas Equine Veterinary Medical Association and Board of Directors member, founding member Texas H.O.R.S.E. and Executive Committee member.
